Loving Others Essay

1621 words - 6 pages

Strand1StrandNatalie StrandHearnMIN 108-14May 1, 2014Loving OthersPeople strive to be the best they can be. To most people, this means having the most stuff or being the highest position of their job. To Christians, this means following in the footsteps of Christ and living a life that honors God and the life of Jesus. Repeatedly the Bible tells us to love others and care for them as you would care for yourself. Mark 12:31 states this directly, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." This verse straightforwardly commands us to love others as you would love yourself. Also 1 John 4:7 states, "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God." Through these verses, as well as throughout the Bible, we can see that God wants us to love one another as He would love you. I believe that the essence of Christian life, faith, and ministry empowers this belief and those who wish to follow God and the life of Jesus, should live their life by putting others before themselves and loving everyone equally.Loving others is a very important aspect of Christianity. The greatest act a person can do for someone else is die for them. Jesus does exactly that - showing his love for us by dying for our sins. John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life." This passage shows God's unconditional love for those who believe in Him. God gave His only son for us who died on the cross for our sins. I believe that by trusting in God and following the footsteps of Jesus, one can live a fulfilling life.Others have also noted on the fact that God calls us to love our neighbor as we would love ourselves and to spread the word of Jesus Christ. James Oswald writes:If you think you are helping lost people with your sympathy and understanding, you are a traitor to Jesus Christ. You must have a right-standing relationship with Him yourself, and pour your life out in helping others in His way- not in a human way that ignores God."[-1: Oswald Chambers, and James Reimann. My Utmost for His Highest: An Updated Edition in Today's Language: The Golden Book of Oswald Chambers (Grand Rapids, MI: Discovery House, 1992).]After reading this, I neither agree nor disagree with Oswald. I believe helping anyone try to find Jesus does not make you a traitor to him, but before you begin to preach to others, ask yourself if you believe what you are saying is true. In Romans 15:21, Paul quotes, "But as it is written, 'Those who have never been told of him will see, and those who have never heard will understand.'" Your actions alone can indirectly bring someone to the word of God. By showing someone love and kindness, they will eventually realize it is God who shines through your actions and feel loved by Him as well.We can sometimes believe that loving others means bringing them to know God....
