Shakespeare’s play “Macbeth” which is considered one of his darkest and most powerful tragedies, Lady Macbeth and Macbeth, both very important characters, change dramatically throughout the play. At first lady Macbeth appeared confident, assertive and the dominant partner. She was cold blooded and cruel but then she became nervous, scared and suicidal. Soon Macbeth and Lady Macbeths relationship ends up on a rocky path. She is the one who influenced and hurried Macbeth to kill Duncan to have more power, so Macbeth could become king and they could be very wealthy and have a lot of power.
At the beginning of the book Macbeth was awarded the position of Thane of Cawdor, but Lady Macbeth wanted more, she wanted to be powerful and rich which is why she and Macbeth decided to kill Duncan at their own house. However it takes much convincing from lady Macbeth for him to join in. "We will proceed no further in this business" (1.7) This is Macbeth early in the play ...view middle of the document...
She seems very confident in herself, she’s asking for these things, strength, no remorse or fear but she is confident that her plan will work so long as nobody gets in her way.
As Macbeth begins to take the leadership role we start to see a major change in him. He was very reluctant to kill Duncan. However when faced with the threat of Banquo and Macduff he without hesitation kills Banquo and to hurt Macduff, Macbeth kills his Wife (Lady Macduff) and his kids. Which ultimately kills Macbeth in the end. We then start to see the change in lady Macbeth. “Will these hands ne’er be cleaned? No more o’that my lord” (5.1.39) As lady Macbeth begins to spend all her time washing her hands repeatedly; her mind is fixed on the murder of Duncan and she is engulfed with guilt.
As a couple they do not communicate anymore and this has a huge impact on Lady Macbeth’s health. Her husband no longer cares for her well fare, he has no time for her, and he is too busy plotting murders.
After lady Macbeth finally just cant take all the guilt anymore she was suicidal. Not in the fact of wanting to hang herself, but in the way of being mentally unstable. “She was so tortured by the sudden guilt of the murder of Duncan, she killed herself.” (5.8.82-84) When presented with the horrific news Macbeth doesn’t seem to be moved he seems as if he has been expecting her death for a while. “She should have died hereafter” (5.5) His loss of feeling towards his wife is caused by his distraction and present state of mind. If his mind been calm and relaxed, and not distracted by anything, he probably would have reacted to this news with more feeling. However, his whole personality has changed, and furthermore death does not faze him any more because he has committed five murders since the beginning of the play. Macbeth starts out a heroic man of good doings, but his whole attitude completely changes because of the murders he commits. His relationships with many characters are broken or become weak. He starts trusting no one and hating and even killing any and everyone that gets in his way. His wife may have started him on his killing streak, but he was the one to finish himself off.
