Ideas : Ambition/Power
Macbeth isn't really ambitious as he says he is going to stop because he knows he is going too far - “Vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself, And falls on th’other” Falls also foreshadows the big fall of macbeth and his wife further on the play. Vaulting emphasises how far they are going
Lady macbeth is more ambitious than Macbeth - Lady macbeth has always wanted more power but macbeth only wanted power after the witches told him of the prophecy - “Have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums, And dashed the brains out had i so sworn as you” - Lady Macbeth is willing to do anything rather than break her word from killing the king. This shows how much she wants power - kill the king and wont go back. The use of the emotive language “dashed the brains out” creates a vivid image in the readers head to emphasise how ambitious lady M is for power that she would commit that horrible crime.
