La película Machuca tiene lugar en Chile durante el levantamiento del presidente democrático electo Salvador Allende. La película se centra en un niño llamado Gonzalo, que proviene de una familia de clase media. Luego está Pedro Machuca, que proviene de una familia pobre que vive en los barrios marginales, trae consigo a su vecina y amiga Silvana. Gonzalo asiste a una reconocida escuela de habla inglesa. El director, el Padre McEnroe, que se libera con el espíritu de Allende, inicia un programa integrado para niños desfavorecidos. Por lo tanto, causando un alboroto entre los padres en la escuela.
Gonzalo y Machuca lentamente comienzan a formar una amistad. Machuca saca a Gonzalo de su zona de confort y lo lleva a los mítines nacionalistas y socialistas, mostrándole cómo vender banderas. Ambos niños están fascinados con las respectivas clases sociales de cada uno, pero también están sorprendidos por lo que encuentran.
