Major depressive disorder is a mood disorder in which you feel sad, discouraged, pessimistic, and at the extreme end of it suicidal. It has been called the “common cold” of psychological disorders because it is the number one reason that people seek mental health services. A study done by the CDC estimated that one out of every ten adults has been depressed at one point or another in their life. Depression can be caused by many things such as illness, abuse, a lack of serotonin in your brain, or countless other things.

And if you take those steps at home and you still feel depressed you should seek help as soon as you can.
In the psychology textbook written by David G. Myers, the symptoms of depression include feeling deeply discouraged, lacking of energy, being socially isolated, and several other symptoms. Depression can also make it very hard to do basic everyday things like simply get out of bed, eat, or sleep. And according to the textbook people in college are extra susceptible to getting depressed because of several factors. Such as, feeling disappointed by their level of academic success, social stress, or isolation from the people you care about. The textbook states that thirty-one percent of college students have felt depressed at some point during their college career. Making it very hard for them to focus or even get out of bed which makes their grades worse which deepens their depression.
Unlike a lot of other information written on depression the textbook talks about “the upside of being down” (Myers 621), which means there is something good about feeling bad. Depression is coping mechanism in some ways as well as a defense mechanism for your body like vomiting when you get food poisoning. Depression is our bodies way to let us hibernate from ourselves, it lets us let go of unattainable goals, defuses aggression, and basically slows us down. But when depression continues for an extended period of time it becomes dysfunctional and you should seek help.
So the way in which both the article and the textbook discuss depression share several similarities but they approach the subject in different manners.
