Making Marriage Successful Essay

879 words - 4 pages

In a perfect world, marriage would be extremely easy. Husbands and wives would not have to worry about divorce or even arguments because in a perfect world those concepts would not even exist. However, this perfect world will never exist. In marriage problems, difficulties, and mishaps do occur, yet many couples still plan to take the next step in their relationship by getting married. For many, marriage is viewed as a beautiful experience that two people are able to share. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary OnLine, marriage is "an intimate or close union." Usually, everyone who begins to consider marriage in their relationship, plans to make it work until death do they part. For a successful marriage, the importance of both spouses being one hundred percent committed to each other and able to communicate with one another is very significant.Commitment to one another is a key factor in a successful marriage. For a wife to be fully committed to her husband in marriage, she must promise to be honest and loyal. As stated in the traditional marriage vows, for example,"Do you Sue promise to love, honor, and cherish him for better for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health?""I do.""And, forsaking all others, will you remain only unto him for as long as you both shall live?""I do."(Country Weddings). However, commitment goes far beyond the initial vows. It takes an indescribable amount of love from both spouses to stay committed to one another for all eternity. One's spouse may not have the perfect smile or the body of a model. He may not be rich or be the owner of a spectacular wardrobe. He may not have been popular enough to be voted prom king in high school. However, to be committed is to be in love with all of that person, not just parts of him. Everyone has his own flaws and imperfections. When a person accepts those flaws or imperfections of her spouse, it proves how committed to her spouse she truly is. Commitment is an agreement or pledge to do something in the future (Merriam-Webster Dictionary OnLine). What one does to nurture the relationship with her spouse is certainly a positive aspect of that commitment. It may be as extravagant as planning a romantic walk along the shoreline at sunset after a picnic on the beach, or as simple as ordering pizza and watching a football game. The nurturing has been fulfilled. Many couples who actually carry out the actions of commitment towards one another are those who truly value their marriage. By continuing to be committed to one another in marriage helps make that marriage very successful.Additionally, marriage...
