As a future teacher of young children I think that one of the most important components of the classroom curriculum is guidance. I believe the goal of a teacher is not just to stop inappropriate behavior but help the children learn to manage their own behaviors. A central part of early childhood education is the development of social competence. It is important for teachers to know that the strategy used to help children learn to manage their behaviors is a crucial part of their development. I think that it is important for teachers to teach what to do rather than just telling them what not to do. Guidance is a process learned after time and being able to make mistakes and learn from them in a supportive environment is a great opportunity for children to become socially competent. There is only so much teaching that a teacher can do before a child should learn how to solve a situation on their own. Our job as a teacher will be to teach our students right from wrong and hope that they learn to figure out it out for themselves in the future. Teachers assist children with their problems in a positive way and teach them appropriate behaviors so they will understand what is acceptable and unacceptable. I believe that guidance is the part of early childhood education that helps a child develop and mold as a socially competent child.
In my classroom I plan to have positive guidance strategies to help children develop self-control, assist them in making the right decisions, and encourage them to take responsibilities for their actions. An indirect form of guidance that I plan to apply in my classroom is establishing a positive classroom environment. A positive classroom environment will provide my students with a foundation to the best possible education and lead way to different positive techniques for guidance. Some of these techniques include class rules, consistent routines, room arrangement, and activities to help development. I also plan to incorporate direct forms of guidance into my classroom including redirection, verbal guidance, problem solving, and natural consequences.. I plan to do this by setting realistic expectation for my students, focusing on individual needs, and help them to recognize appropriate behaviors. All the techniques I plan to use in my classroom will lead to a more positive environment which in return will help with the guidance of the children in it.
The physical environment of the classroom plays a huge role in behavior and can lead to either appropriate behaviors or tempt children to misbehave. The amount of free space in a room can lead children to different behaviors such as having too much space will encourage them to run where as having a small space can direct children to sit down and play in small groups. In my classroom I plan to create different learning centers that will have enough space to allow the children to move from area to area but stay in smaller groups. I...
