During the Lego group exercise, we applied our managerial knowledge that we learned throughout the course to perform the Lego tasks. However there are several weaknesses I found afterward, which cause the failure in our group performance. First let’s examine our team structure and characteristics. Team size is very important aspect for forming a effective team. Generally, the ideal team size would be seven people. A team with too many members will cause too many conflicts and disagreement and then prevent group from making efficient decisions. For this step, our team did quite well, because we all followed through the instruction slides that give well-defined procedures for the task.
Then we moved to step two, evaluate resources. In this step, a team needs to assess the status of their both material and human resources and find out what they have or why they lack. In my group, material resource was not a problem, since it does not require any special item to complete the task, also the leader was soon be appointed because it’s required to do so. And then we also decided to left 20 minutes for assemble the Lego in the end to ensure there is enough time to perform. After we succeeded in step two, we started to generate actual ideas and alternatives for the task. However that is where we failed, because our group could not generate enough ideas for us to evaluate, and we failed to make backup plans. That means if our plan fails, no other options will be available to switch, and this directly cause the failure in the task.
In addition, our group’s failure can also explained by the five decision-making model. According to this model, effective decision making is depend on the interaction and power difference of leader and group member. When the leader power is low and group’s power is high, the leader should act as facilitator that can help define problem and highlight alternatives. And for the group members, they must have strong skills for solving the problems. In my team, I was selected as leader, but I consider myself as a weak leader because I don’t have too much experience to develop a strong leadership.
