Introduction
It has been discovered that a section head within Bolt has been using the resources of the organisation for his own personal gain. This misappropriation of company assets by the middle-manager, who is the son-in-law of the General Manager, has resulted in a decrease in productivity and has led to considerable trust issues within the business. The purpose of this report is to define the issue of managerial ethics and analyse the individual management functions that are associated with the problem as well as suggest recommendations to amend the problem. Golden, Skalak, Clayton & Pill (2011) note that misappropriation of company assets by fraudulent managers has a substantial impact on the morale and reputation of all company employees. The main priority of Bolt is to ensure that it upholds organisational ethical responsibility for the sake of its stakeholders as well as for its staff. Organisational ethics are ‘the values and principles that an organisation has chosen that guide the behaviour of people within the organisation and/or what stakeholders expect of the organisation.’ (Samson and Daft, 2012) Breaching organisational ethics would result in employee dissatisfaction, a decrease in efficiency and ultimately, a decline in company revenue. (Jackson et al., 2009) The management functions of organisational control and leadership will be used in order to clearly identify the problems within the business.
Management Function - Controlling
Organisational control is defined as ‘the systemic process through which managers regulate organisational activities to make them consistent with expectations established in plans, targets and standards of performance.’ (Samson and Daft, 2012) In order to manage effectively, control measures must be implemented within an organisation. The three types of control used by businesses are feedforward, concurrent and feedback control. Feedforward control attempts to identify and prevent deviations before they occur. (Schermerhorn, 2010) On the other hand, concurrent control monitors ongoing employee activities to ensure that they are consistent with company standards.
