Management Influences Organizational Growth In Urban Areas

Robbins, (1986) defines an organization as a continuously coordinated social unit composed of two or more people that function on a relatively continuous basis to achieve a common goal. Nzuve ,(1999) described it as a coordinated social setting where people interact in order to achieve a basic aim. An organization is composed of two or more persons may include hospitals, churches, schools, Government Ministries, Trade Unions etc. Cole, (1998) defines organizational behaviour as a systematic study of the behaviour of individuals within work groups, including an analysis of the nature of groups, the development of structures between and within groups, and process of implementing change.
The principle issues as addressed by Nzuve, (1998) are:
1. Personal (individual behaviour and performance at work.
2. The way people work in groups and the nature of their work.
3. The nature of social structures and organization designed at work.
4. The required processes when adapting to behaviour and changing conditions in an organization.
According to Johns, (1995) organization exists because they can achieve results which individuals cannot achieve alone due to the following.
a) By grouping together individuals can overcome limitations imposed by physical environment and their own biological limitations.
b) Organizations provide an individual need for companionship.
c) Organizations increase productive ability as they enable: specialization (division of labour), exchange , synergy (this concept implies “the whole” is greater than the sum of the parts) ,
d) They accumulate knowledge (for subsequent use and further learning)
e) They save time. (Organization makes it possible for objective to be reached in a shorter time than it would take for individuals to achieve them.
With the above concepts one can analyze how the study of organization will influence the growth and excellence of organization based in Nairobi or any other city under the following heading:
1.0 Nature of organization behaviour and approaches to organization and management
Stephen, Timothi and Seema (2008) says that organizational behaviour highlights several aspects like: way of thinking which requires clearly identifying the level of analysis (individual, group, organizational). Secondly it is multi-disciplinary as it draws principles, theories, and models from psychology, sociology and cultural anthropology. Thirdly, it has humanistic orientation as it assumes that individual feelings, attitudes, perceptions and goals are important to the organization.
