Conflict can be designed as a sharp disagreement or opposition, as of interests, ideas, etc (Webster's, 1976). At least one party tries to voice their opinion in order to sway the other components of the conflict over to their side. Each member wants his or her opinion heard. They want their voice to make a difference. They want to be acknowledged. Conflict is unavoidable in an effective group. You will never come across a group that has worked together for any length of time without expressing differences and disagreements. Conflict can be derived through various reasons for example: a person's perspective, their interest, their personal beliefs, or their own core values. Conflict within Learning Teams can be as simple as where to hold a meeting or as complex as subject matter. Within a Learning Team environment conflict is even more substantial because of the many different types of personalities that are present. The process of conflict resolution includes, determining the source of the conflict, choosing the right approach, and resolving the conflict.Sources of ConflictThe sources of conflict can be classified into three groups: substantive, procedural, and effective (Carter, Bishop, & Lyman, 2002, chap 7). Substantive conflict is a disagreement over the members ideas and group issues. The conflict is usually directed toward the groups ultimate goal. Procedural conflict is a disagreement within the members about the way the group should go about attempting to accomplish their goal. The conflict is more about the methods used in the group. Affective conflict is all about the group members themselves.
