Communication is the process of imparting or interchanging of thoughts and opinions by speech, writing or signs. Some types of communication are mass communication, group communication, individual, public, interpersonal and intrapersonal communication, corporate communication. Some types of communication are formal, informal, grapevine and bypass communication.In today's high tech communication environment, effective communication is still a major challenge facing organizations. Today, one enjoys the convenience of technological devices such as cell phones, computers, and faxes, which allow us to be globally connected within seconds. According to Sarah Fenson communication is, "an exchange or communion with another...communion demands that we listen and speak skillfully, not just talk mindlessly" (Fenson, 2000). We make the mistake that much talking equals much communication and that is a wrong assumption.There are contributing factors that influence effective communication. First, we are all different, and perceive communication through personal filters that are affected by diversity, knowledge, experiences, and biases. Next, both the sender and receiver must take responsibility for understanding communication. Finally, we need to take time to develop and perfect communication skills.Communication In observing the flow of communication in the workplace, I have found that employees in my organization prefer to communicate in person rather than to follow the trend many other companies follow these days - communication via email, instant messenger, and voicemail. The organization I work for fits in the small-to-medium business bracket, with 75% of its staff working on the production floor. The other 25% are office staff. Because we are in such small quarters, it is much easier and effective to communicate face-to-face with one another. Of course, we still use email to follow-up with a paper trail, as many times it is advisable to have a written record on file to keep oneself and others accountable for important items and information. Consequently, most of our production employees have no need for computers in their work environment, and are often not granted access to the internet or to email. In a scenario where a production employee needs to speak with office personnel, the employee is advised to either call or walk over to that individual and communicate the message verbally. The other side of communication in my company is the need to inform employees, company-wide, of events and information essential to their productivity and safety in their daily routines and activities. Company-wide memos and bulletins are an excellent way to communicate training, events, and other tidbits of information to our staff. We have found that by using several different mediums of communication within the organization, we can effectively communicate "things to know" to employees in both the office and production floor.
