Manuscript On Miscarriage And Stillbirth For Business Communications In Apa Style

2475 words - 10 pages

AbstractWhy did this happen to me? How can I prevent this from happening again? Will I ever be able to carry a fetus to term? These are probably the most common questions asked by women who experience a pregnancy loss (Lerner, 2003). I asked myself these same questions when I delivered a stillborn baby at 23 weeks gestation. With the help of Dr. Henry M. Lerner, M.D., OB/GYN and Dr. Rochelle Friedman, M.D., I hope to answer these and many other questions relating to the loss of a pregnancy through miscarriage and stillbirth. Great respect is paid to the emotional pain of miscarriage and stillbirth.Miscarriage and Stillbirth:Facts About Pregnancy Loss, Grieving, and RecoveringTermination of a pregnancy is a heartbreaking experience for any person. Understanding possible causes and treatment options, as well as what to expect for the future, is sometimes of great help. Understanding the grieving process is a big part of recovery. It can also be useful to know what to expect during the process by which the fetus is expelled, and how to cope with subsequent pregnancies.Miscarriage is the loss of pregnancy without obvious cause before the 20th week gestation. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), about 15% of known pregnancies end this way. Miscarriage is a relatively common experience accounting for about 50-60% of terminations (Linden, 2005). However, that does make it any easier to endure. Ending a pregnancy without a baby to hold in your arms is heartbreaking. Take a step toward emotional healing by understanding what can cause a miscarriage, what increases the risk and what medical care might be needed. Some studies have shown that another 50% of pregnancies are terminated before the woman even misses a menstrual period, as the fertilized egg does not implant properly and is passed. If a fetal demise is determined to have occurred after the 20th week gestation, the loss is termed a stillbirth (Linden, 2005). Although a common and natural event, the cause of a miscarriage cannot always be determined. However, Lerner (2003) states the following:Miscarriages happen because the chromosomes of the egg and sperm did not fuse correctly at the time of conception. Because the chromosomes contain the genes that direct all growth, the incorrect fusion leaves the embryo without the proper ‘blue-prints’ for development. At some point in the early weeks of pregnancy, the fetus dies (p. 1).There are symptoms of miscarriage that can in some way clue in a woman that something in not right. The first symptom is usually vaginal bleeding, with or without cramping. During the very early stages of pregnancy, the bleeding is minimal because there is less tissue to pass. However, it should be noted that cramping without bleeding is normal, and it should not be confused as having a miscarriage. Furthermore, bleeding itself does not always mean a miscarriage is evident (Lerner, 2003).Another sign of pending miscarriage...
