Obstacles are challenges that can hinder the outcome of someone’s life. People face obstacles everyday whether it is large or small, in your life or in a story. After reading stories in class I have been assured that there are many types of obstacles. These obstacles can be life changing or change nothing at all. Kevin Liu’s obstacle is one not many people could withstand. His family use to own a shop and lived right above it. Their landlord evicted them for renovations with no notice and left them homeless. The parents could speak very little english so they did not have a good chance of getting a job anytime soon. The family then moved into a shelter in downtown Manhattan. Living in the shelter was really hard for the two brothers. Kevin did not tell kids at school that he lived in a shelter, but even the kids at the shelter bullied him. He hated it there; there was no privacy and it was always loud. It was very stressful for him and his grades were on a downward spiral. His biggest hatred towards the shelter was how dirty it was. A lot of the times he found excrement all over the bathroom. After living in the shelter for a year he found an after school program. The program gave him a quiet place to work and safe place to hang out. After three years of living in the shelter, a program helped his family get an apartment for themselves and his mom got a job. He started to let go of his shame and started to tell a few people about his homeless experience. “I thought, ‘if he turns his back on me, then he isn’t a true friend,” said Kevin. Kevin is now doing well in school and helping other homeless children in programs.

Odysseus was manipulated into staying with her for a year. On the journey home the men had to tune out the sirens so they were not lured into rocks causing a...
