On November 6, 2012 Colorado passed Amendment 64,the legalization of medicinal marijuana. Since then it has been a very controversial issue of whether or not to legalize marijuana nationwide. I do believe that legalizing marijuana nationwide is an amazing idea. If you don't know why this is controversial then stick around, put your feet up, and grab your reading glasses.
Many people believe that marijuana is a very dangerous illegal drug. I do not believe this is so. Marijuana is not a killer. In most cases marijuana is believed to be a healer. This also four times less dangerous than alcohol and tobacco. It is a form of a cannabinoid. Cannabinoids are plants that are intended for physco active drug use or medicinal use. Cannabis can come in other forms than marijuana. This drug can help cure seizures, Tourette's, and believe it or not, Cancer ( top 10 health benefits of marijuana.)
Marijuana is an amazing substance that is very helpful in all ways. If the United States legalized cannabis the government could tax it greatly. In addition to its benefits of legalization, the drug war on marijuana would be ended, which absorbs billions of dollars. These reasons for legalization completely outweigh the negatives.
An expert on this topic, Mike Moffat, says over 8-16 billion dollars would be collected in taxes just by legalizing marijuana nationwide. Just like the U.S. does on everything else, just tax it. Excise taxes and hemp industry taxes would be enough to erase or at least slow our nation's deficit. Excise taxes are taxes that are placed on a certain special goods like tobacco, marijuana, and alcohol. Hemp is the fiber collected from cannabis. The hemp industry includes items such as twine, cloth, and shampoo. Taxing these goods would help our economy so much. Just Colorado alone made 100 million dollars in the first year of legalization (Kerry Sanders). Our nation's deficit is 17.2 trillion dollars as of February 7 2014. This is truly concerning because who knows what will become of our country if this outrageous load continues to grow at the pace of 2.5 billion dollars a day. This is why I feel legalizing marijuana is our lifeguard in this ocean of trouble.
I'm sure you're thinking by now, "It's a drug for a reason, it's not safe." This stereotype is poorly researched, and that's all it is too, a stereotype. If people were worried about dangerous substances being legal then why not point fingers at tobacco products and alcohol. Every year 50,000 people die from alcohol and 400,000 die from tobacco, just in the U.S. You want to know how many people die a year from marijuana each year, Nick Wing from The Huffington Post says, " Not a single person has ever died from a weed overdose." You see it's not bad at all. Honestly it would take about 20-30 thousand times the amount of weed in a joint to kill you.
The stereotypes about marijuana often come from people who have not done any research on the subject.
Yes I agree that doing this drug...
