In its early days cannabis or “marijuana” as it’s mostly known was first established in 8000 B.C. Later becoming more and more popular cannabis was incorporated in many things such as weave to fine hemp cloths, medicine, and as a fiber for the Chinese and later all across the world. Nowadays marijuana is illegal and has been so since 1970 after the Federal Controlled Substances Act was passed. Now there’s an ongoing controversy about cannabis being legalized or decriminalized for medical or even recreational uses. This total shutdown of marijuana by congress seemed too harsh according to President Nixon so he decriminalized the possession of marijuana for personal use and the small distributions of marijuana would no longer be considered an offense in 1972. Also a new issue took face, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) wanted marijuana to be reclassified as a schedule 2 drug so it can be prescribed to patients by doctors for medical purposes. After multiple trial and errors the NORML got what they wanted but shortly after the physicians prescribing the medical marijuana were being threating by the DEA of being shut down. Then the Supreme Court ruled that physicians can recommend marijuana to patients but cannot prescribe it to them because of its toxics in the smoke of marijuana.
