The tale goes that in 1155 a Persian monk left his monastery cell to go for a walk on his walk he came across a plant unaffected by the scorching sun. He found it interesting because most plants around this time would wither away by the sun being that hot. He took a couple of the leaves and chewed on them as he walked, when he got back to the monastery he had a big smile on his face and was in the best mood. People say that for the rest of his life (sixty six years from then) until the day he died he stayed in that careless joyful stupor. That plant was the cannabis sativa. Marijuana should be legalized because it could improve the economy, help ill men & women, and help produce materials.
The cannabis plant has been used for thousands of years from ancient Chinese medicine to helping Queen Victoria with menstrual cramps. Marijuana was a revolutionary new medicine and resource. The first two copies of the declaration of independence were written on hemp paper. A few of the presidents of the United States such as; George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Franklin Pierce, grew or smoked hemp at some point in their life. “Pierce smoked with his troops as a general in the Mexican-American war. In a letter to his family, he says cannabis is ‘about the only good thing’ in the war (Stoned Presidents, Spark Report). The 1930’s were when the nation started to spread a fear of marijuana especially when in 1936 the film ‘Reefer Madness” came out which was a propaganda film and demonized marijuana and the use of marijuana.
In 1937 congress passed the marijuana tax act which criminalized marijuana (illegal to possess) unless you paid a large tax for medicinal or industry purposes. The controlled substance act of 1970 categorized cannabis a s a schedule 1 drug which means it has a high risk of abuse.” Marijuana leads to dependence in around 9-10 % of its adult users.
