The underground market allows the trade of illegal goods and services. Within this market there are many goods traded. Americans use fuel, weapons, animals for medicine, and alcohol to boost the economy growth as well as satisfy the needs of citizens. Yet, one of the goods in the underground market generates billions of dollars and it isn’t legal for us throughout the U.S. due to its effects on humans and it’s heavily supported opposition spanning from parents to some doctors. The illegal good that is being talked about is the one drug that most teens and college students are exposed to daily: marijuana. Did you know that marijuana is used more by people between the ages of 12- 25? The question I am asking, should marijuana be legalized nationally? Marijuana has created a disagreement in the U.S. by making people view the pros and cons of the drug.
In 1971, President Richard Nixon declared a “War on Drugs” to attempt to stop the illegal drug trade, and shape America’s drug policy. In order for the “War on Drugs” to be carried out, they used the newly created Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and the U.S. military to stop trade coming in and out of the country and stop smuggling in the U.S. In today’s world, this has become a trillion dollar effort to stop the illegal trade in America.
About $51 billion is spent annually towards the “War on Drugs” in America. According to the Drug Policy, the amount of non-violent drug arrests in the U.S. had amounted to 1.5 million in 2011. Of those 1.5 million, 800,000 of them were marijuana related arrests, and 90% of those arrests were simple possession charges.
People have different views on whether or not marijuana should be legal between the Republicans and Liberals. Republicans believe that marijuana should not be legal. They state that marijuana is bad for the health of those using it, as well as the others around them. They also use statistics given by the Drug Enforcement Agency showing that a driver under the influence of marijuana is ten times more likely to be involved in an accident than a driver under the influence of alcohol. As well as that, they use the number of drug seized coming into the U.S. to prove their point. Another thought of the Republican Party is that legalizing marijuana can lead to more crime due to who is distributing on what turf.
Liberals, on the other hand, believe that marijuana should be legalized. They feel that the drug is a failed attempt. They show stats that say passionate users of marijuana are not treated of their habits after jail, and also state that imprisoning millions of people on possession charges is a waste of taxpayers’ money. Also if marijuana is legalized, the government may control the substance and maintain the amounts offered. Once legal, the government could also tax the product and jump the economy.
21 states have legalized marijuana and 12 are pending for legalization. Two of those states have legalized it for both...
