Marks&Spencer brand (M&S) has become world famous as the largest British clothes manufacturer. The company now has more than 800 stores. In the UK itself there are about 700 stores, and the rest are in 40 other countries. Modern M&S is a multidisciplinary network cooperating with the best manufacturers and leading designers. It provides its customers with various groups of goods.
The company was founded by a Jewish immigrant from Slonim (now -- the territory of Belarus) Michael Marks. Commercial conquest of France began with stores opening in Paris on Boulevard Haussmann and in Lyon in 1975. Further expansion to other French and Belgian cities happened in the 1980s. Though in Paris the shops were popular, but in 2001, in Western Europe eighteen shops were sold. However, in April 2011, M&S reiterated shops reopening and changing the direction of sales. Apart from selling clothes, it was decided to open several food outlets throughout the French capital. The first line was opened in 24 November 2011. On the Champs Elysees the opening ceremony was attended by CEO Marc Bolland, the British Ambassador to France, Sir Peter Westmacott and the model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. The Daily Mail reported that 1,000 customers had been standing in line for 2 hours at the opening of the store.
Stores of this brand can now be found in more than 40 international locations including: Armenia, Bahrain, Bermuda, Bulgaria, People's Republic of China, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Egypt, Estonia, France, Gibraltar, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Jersey, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Latvia, Libya, Lithuania, Malaysia, Malta, Morocco, Netherlands, Oman, Philippines, Poland, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, India, Ukraine and the United Arab Emirates. All international stores operate under franchise with the exception of those that are owned by, for example, in the Republic of Ireland and Hong Kong. A lot of the shops are full with shopping malls with grocery stores, cafes and entertainment venues.
In their work Corporation always made focuses on the ratio of quality goods and fair value. When this reputation was beginning to waver, the company always had serious difficulties. It can be proclaimed that M&S has historically been the trademark of "British Goods quality" and famous for uncompromising attitude towards customer relations, following the rule: "The customer is always and completely right".
For evolving and keeping pace with time any company needs to deal with the current society problems. In 2006 the corporation announced a marketing campaign in order to underscore to its customers various ethical and environmental aspects of the production of goods and search methods for solving problems. Among these aspects there were Fairtrade products problems, sustainable fishing and environmentally friendly textile dyes.
In 2007, M&S suggested the initiative known as "Plan A" to increase the environmental component of sustainable business. The plan envisaged the obligation to address key social and environmental challenges facing M&S today and in the future and covered five topics: the climate change, waste production, sustainable raw materials, “fair partnership” and health. These commitments were formulated as follows:
