Mathematics Essay

Mathematics are important and are used by everyone. My family uses math daily. Doctors use it for various things and need math for their jobs. Many sports, such as basketball, use math. Math is needed to be able to do almost anything.
Math is used in countless numbers of ways in my family’s daily life. For instance, when we are shopping we add up all the prices of the items we are about to buy to figure out the price we will pay. Another example of how my family and I use math is with measurement. Mainly, I use measurement while cooking. It is necessary to use measurement to put the appropriate amount of ingredients in a mixture or recipe. Sometimes, I have to convert the measurements to be smaller or larger, for example when I am cooking twice the amount of mix than what is listed I have to change one half cup into one cup, one teaspoon into two teaspoons, etcetera. They take their patient’s temperature and use math when they decide if they have a healthy temperature. Math also is frequently used by doctors when they read someone’s blood pressure and when they measure a patient’s height or weight. Also, doctors determine if their patient’s weight is healthy according to their age and height. Math is necessary for any doctor to correctly do their jobs.
Basketball is just one sport that uses math. In basketball, time is one form of mathematics used. There are four quarters in professional basketball, each consisting of twelve minutes. In college basketball, there are two halves; each half has twenty minutes. The clock is stopped whenever a foul is made or a timeout is called. After the timeout is over or the player makes their foul shots the clock resumes and the game continues. Math is used also simply as numbers on a player’s shirt. There are only five players allowed to play at once on each team and players wear their team’s uniform with their unique number to identify that specific player. Basketball also depends on math when points are accumulated. Free throws are worth only one point and are only made after a player is fouled and is behind the foul line. When a basket is made while either on the three point line or inside the three point line, it counts as two points for a team, unless they throw the ball after the clock stops, foul another player, travel, or double dribble. Three points can only be made from behind the three point line. Basketball is one of the many sports that need mathematics to function.
Math is used constantly used by everyone. In my family’s life, we use math for shopping, measuring, and telling time. Doctors use math when they measure a patient’s height and weight and then when they prescribe the correct amount of medicine according to the patient’s height, weight, and age. Sports, including basketball, involve math with gaining points and with the time in each game. Overall, math is vital to daily life for anyone.
