Mathematics helps human beings understand our complex universe. Astronomy guides scientists to the obvious basics and the deep secrets of the never-ending galaxies that surround planet earth. Mathematics is the base of astronomy, which made the discoveries of outer space possible. The foundation of astronomy was made possible through ancient mathematicians allowing various countries to participate in the learning of the universe. Many inventions and important findings were employed by the pairing of math and astronomy. Today, the two concepts have made many oppurtunities and wonders reality.

The famous Indian astronomer, Aryabhata, discovered that the earth spins on an axis and the planets are controlled by the sun (Astronomy in Ancient India). Germany played a role in discoveries during the nineteenth century that were a benefit to our universe. The country's scientists molded astrometry, the measurement of the angular separations between celestial bodies, which allows us to know just how vast our atmosphere is (Fauvel).
Many inventions were formed for astronomy's benefit. The ten-inch heliometer was invented by Germany's Adolf Respold, which helped in the precision tracking of stars. Because the exact measurements were so crucial to being accurate, his invention measured angles to a fraction of an arc second (Fauvel). The tool gravitational lens, was created in order to bend the light of a distant collection of stars or galaxy, causing the image to be fractured into several different images. Because the galaxies and stars are so close together, a present-day telescope can not resolve how many images can be produced from just one spot, so the gravitational lens is used (Battersby). Sir Isaac Newton fabricated the reflecting telescope in 1668, which is used for basic observation of outer space (Sir Isaac Newton). In 1767, Nevil Maskelyne issued the first Nautical Almanac, which contained tables of lunar distances from selected stars and arrays used for navigation.
Mathematics contributed to the important findings that we have today related to astronomy. Germany's Leibniz invented calculus, which assists in calculating gravitational attractions between orbiting bodies (Fauvel). Johann Bode constructed an empirical math model that was found to correspond with accuracy to the known distances of planets . Spherical trigonometry was appointed so that observers on earth could make calculations. Radar astronomy was used during the Apollo project, which allowed the distance from the earth to the moon to be determined by centimeters. This was made possible by installing special reflectors on the moon, which made the laser light bounce off of the moon.
Today, mathematics and astronomy have a huge part in our society. The Space Race incident between America and Russia took off in 1957 when their satellites were released beyond earth's realm.
