Have you ever wondered how the business empire of McDonalds was started? With over ninety nine billion served, it was started in 1940 in San Bernardino, California. It was started off as just a Bar-B-Q that served just twenty items. Its first mascot was named “Speedee” They eventually realized that by setting up their kitchen like an assembly line that they could be much more productive and get their food done faster, with every employee doing a specified job; the restaurants production rate became much higher. A milkshake machine vendor came into their small restaurant one day, his name was Ray Kroc. He saw how much potential the restaurant has, so he bought it out and opened one of the first franchises. Within the first year of Ray Kroc buying it, there were one hundred and two locations all around the world. McDonalds currently is one of the largest fast food restaurants in the world and currently has served over sixty four million customers through one of their thirty two thousand sites. It has almost become a way of life for America. Though, McDonalds started off as a small business between two brothers, it grew into one of the largest restaurant franchises in the world and greatly affects our society and how we eat our food.
During the current recession, most businesses have gone under. While McDonalds did not fall, it was not spared from the economic downturn. Investors were scared and not used to the company turning in weak financial figures. Previously, the company has been known to overturn a profit even in a bad economy (Domanska 2). In this article it states how southern Europe was where the profits started to decrease. “U.S. sales dropped 0.1 percent compared to a 4.4 increase growth last year. In addition, European sales edged down 0.6 percent after a 5.3 percent growth last year.” (Domanska 2) So in other words, while to company overall did not shrink in percentage that substantially, it still caused the stock price to fall because of the scare that it gave investors while they were not used to a decrease in growth.
McDonalds is obviously a significant factor in bringing countries around the world together, however it can also be known as something that would ‘destroy’ a culture because it brings the thought of efficiency into the people’s minds. McDonalds brings the cultures out of countries because, per say, a person would take a vacation to a different country, and instead of eating the countries original food they would eat at McDonalds simply because they know what they are getting. It also can manipulate children because they grow up with McDonalds and their memories of play grounds and the mascot Ronald McDonald (Stumpe 13-14). So basically, McDonalds can be used for globalization, but it can also void people’s minds of their roots by taking over the traditional style of eating and replacing it with a consistent and fast style of eating that is the same all around the world.
McDonalds is also a large reason why...
