In all survival situations, a correlating factor in order to prevail from the circumstances would be what’s at the disposal for the one isolated and all three of these protagonists are lacking necessary resources to an extent. Lack of resources is demonstrated when Rick has just recently awakened from a his coma, without supplies, people or anything to help him get out of the post-apocalyptic hospital he’s in. (Darabont) Whereas in Heinrich’s situation, resources were shown to be limited when he comes to the conclusion that if he is to remain in the U-Boat, he will suffocate, due to lack of oxygen, and be forgotten. (Lovecraft, 79) As he says in paragraph 2 “I know that this madness of my own will at most lead to suffocation when my air is gone (79)”. Pine’s conditions are a bit more extreme in the way that, unalike Rick or Heinrich, Pine has next to no resources and since he is stranded on an island, which quickly shows that he has only what he has.
