Media Effect on Today’s Youth
Media plays a strong hand in the development of a child in society. Youth are easily influenced and could think actions of unsavory morals are appropriate because it was in media. This is a major problem today as the news make reports of children intentionally committing crimes as big as murder. Children are experimenting with drugs and alcohol at an earlier age and there is even a show dedicated to teen moms on MTV. Of course, media is not the only force at fault here as peers and parents are just as much to blame as media. The media is full of violence, sex and the use of addictive substances, that affects youth negatively.

When young children to college students have been exposed to daily doses of violence from the media for majority of their lives, and is not taught the difference between real world and media, how are they supposed to know the proper way of solving a situation?
The internet can have just as bad of an influence on teens as television. In recent years it’s become a trend to record fights between two individuals and post them on social media sites such as, Facebook, Youtube, and World Star Hip-Hop. A teenager, first response when seeing someone fighting is not to stop it, or get help, it is to take out their phone, record it and share it with the world. Social media plays a part in the spreading of these violent videos because they’re allowing the videos to be posted and spread. Fight videos are evidence in and of themselves of how violent today’s youth is becoming. Some could argue that the videos have proven beneficial to a police investigation, but the thousands of other videos that aren’t being used as an investigation are just a method of unnecessary violence and cyberbullying among social networks and social media.
Video games are full of violence which in a way can be more influential than television and the internet. The difference between violence on television and violence in video games is that on television the individual can not control how violence is presented rather someone is beat up or shot, but in a video game it’s up to that individual. A good example of this is a game called “Dishonored.” As players go through the game it’s their decisions that determines how someone in the game dies. This choice makes players imagine violent and gruesome ways to kill another character in the game. This game, in return, responds to the decisions the player makes and affect the world around you in a similar fashion, one may imagine earth would turn out to be if violence continues. The more the players decide to kill in “Dishonored” the darker the world becomes and makes it more challenging to complete their next assignment. If the continuation of openly exposing youth to violence, without any kind of direction to not be influenced and mimic what they see and play then, one could assume that its only a matter of time before violence becomes so intertwined in our society that a murder will be just as common as shoplifting or jaywalking and the punishment; a slap on the wrist.
Teens have always been easily influenced by the idea of sex, but it has gotten out of control in recent years. It becomes a problem when children as young as twelve or even younger is having sex and doesn’t even know the risk. Young men and women are displaying more mature qualities than a twelve year old should. There is a running joke among social media, The joke involves the clothing and behavior of students from older generations compared to this generation. How long ago a dress or skirt that showed your knees was considered “trashy” and now shorter is a common fashion...
