It is estimated that about 8 to 10 million Americans have an eating disorder. Of these people, one fifth of girls ages 6 to 11 have been exposed to websites containing harmful content that may have led them to develop an eating disorder. Another study showed that one third of people who have suffered from anorexia or bulimia nervosa have been affected by a brain abnormality. What is the sole reason for these diseases? Were they influenced by the media, or by something that’s lurking within your brain?

The brain of a person with a disease will perform differently from that of a normal ‘healthy’ person. Experiments took place that scanned the brain patterns of two individuals, one normal and one with an eating disorder. The scans revealed that “combined with a tendency to swap happiness for anxiety, and a mental vise grip on behavior, anorexics might have enough snags in their brain wiring to tip them toward disease” (Rosen 23). The neurological design immensely contributes to eating disorders, whether a faulty brain wiring causes anorexia or vise versa having anorexia causes faulty brain wiring.
Once someone is sucked into the cyclone of having an eating disorder, there is no safe way of getting out.
