Throughout the years, media violence has gotten many complaints. The film and gaming industries have shown a massive increase in sex, violence, and drugs. Some parents complain about having violent children due to the violence in media shown today. Many experiments have been done recently on children and the effect of violent television shows and movies on their mental stability; the results may shock and surprise you.
Media violence in films has existed for almost a century. There are many types of movies, such as silent films from the early 1900s to the modern-day adventure and horror films. Movie ratings are used to censor or control the people who view the films. These films were not ...view middle of the document...
Who sells these movies to the children? Perhaps even children themselves! If you walk into a movie store do you normally see an older person or a younger person?
Media violence desensitizes children from things such as porn, drugs, or violence that may be viewed in their later years. Media violence is not proven “ dangerous” to children above the age of 8(Katz). But, children have also gained a voice in the matter of the media violence issue. They view the violence on things such as games or movies to be helpful in releasing stress and anger. A teen from New Jersey, Joe Stavisky, plays violent games and believes they help prevent physical violence(Rhodes).
A scientist, Seymour Feshbach, did an experiment pertaining to children's reactions to media violence(Rhodes). The 300 private school children did not react at all, while the 300 poorer children were able to release anger(Rhodes). Children should be allowed to view violent media as long as there is not proof that it causes the children to react violently to things. A person should be able to control their violent desires even if they watch violence. The media should not be an excuse.
On the other hand, others believe that media violence causes violence in the youth. It is proven that media violence causes damage to children younger than 8(Katz). The media and the people are often fighting over the effects of media violence in the gaming and film industry. The average child views 200,000 acts of violence and 16,000 murders by the time they approach the age of 18(Katz). Violent movies such as “Jackass” and any other horror or action movies can damage children only under the age of 8 as mentioned above. Children older than 8 are normally unaffected or affected very little.
Media violence can also be affected by what time is available for the children to view television and what channel. Well both channels could show...
