I have chosen to become a medical assistant as a platform to enter into the medical field. In my opinion I can fulfill the job description, I know there is a high demand for the position, and there is always room to grow on the pay scale.
As a medical assistant you may work in a clinical or administrative environment. Clinical medical assistant’s duties may include taking vital signs of patients, conducting in-office screening tests, collecting and preparing specimens to send to diagnostic laboratories, recording medical histories, and administering medications. The work environment may be in a hospital or a physician office along a physician. Administrative medical assistant’s duties may include updating patient records, greeting patients, setting appointments, calling in prescriptions or refills as directed by the doctor, answering phones, and arranging for diagnostic testing or other procedures. Their work environment is usually in an office setting focusing on making sure the medical practice is running smooth. At the end of the day it is just more expensive to hire a, nurse and a secretary when you can somewhat have the best of both worlds with a medical assistant. With the demand for more health services medical assistants can assist doctors in a clinical and administrative manner to allow more patients to be seen.
Our generation is going through a baby boom which is causing an increased population that has demands in the medical field. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics states Medical Assistant as one of the fastest growing professions. It is expected to experience a 35% growth by the year 2016. While life is starting at birth and adding to our population numbers, individuals are expected to live longer. Medical technology has allowed more successful birth rate and life span, creates a higher demand for a medical assistant position. Changes in our healthcare system and being informational to insurance forms also cause a high demand for medical assistants mainly because they can perform clinical as well as administrative duties.
Like many careers location can determine where you fall on the pay scale. Many of the factors influencing location are cost of providing healthcare, business taxes, and population metrics such as age. In 2012 the state of Alaska was the highest paying state with a median salary of...
