Meanwhile, as most people aware of, and concern about its mainstream definition is that it promotes Muslim with wars and terrorisms since it also brings the definition of holy war against unbelievers (non-Muslim). For example, as mentioned in the Koran, chapter 9, verse 73, “O Prophet, fight (Jihad) against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination” Among tens of examples, this particular verse itself could be understood with various definitions and interpretations, including terrorism and hatred.
I do personally cannot be more agreed with the argument that this verse promotes violence, if only I interpret it in an incomprehensible manner. This discussion, however, had been argued by Muslim scholars for hundreds of years since there are points of consideration those needs to be highlighted as well. In the first hand, from the basic level of studies Koran, Muslims are always taught to consider one important aspect in citing the Koranic texts and stories: the overall linguistic context used in certain words, issues, or stories. In another way, those words, issues or stories narrated in the Koran could not be taken directly as they are, since there are a lot of variables need to be considered such as era of time and culture. From this point of view, the same method is applied when anyone tried to view the term jihad in Koran. As it was mentioned bundle of times, most of the jihad term is basically dealing with the oppressed situation faced by Muslims during their foundation period in Mecca, i.e. during the early time of Muhammad’s prophet hood. This command from the God had been part of obligations for those in an oppressed state, which also parallel with today’s issue of human rights, and among this literal example, could be seen on the people of Palestine, Burma, Syria, Egypt as well as those Muslims in Central African Republic (CAR) who are still fighting for their lives, homes, and basic necessities.
Thus, when it comes to our ‘global’ definition of Jihad as we observed from the extremist group such as Al-Qaeda and Jemaah Islamiah (J.I.), I felt very disappointed as they portrayed negative and misconception towards Jihad term, which lead to bunch of skeptics mind in our cosmopolitan society. Hence, at a certain point I do feel insulted by this statement and strongly opposed with the accusation...
