Micron Technologies, the only maker of semiconductor memory chips based in the US was founded and incorporated in 1978. After becoming a publicly held company in June of 1984 selling 2.2 million shares of common stock at an initial price of $14 per share; the company has grown by leaps and bounds. Today, it has established itself as one of the top suppliers of semiconductor memory products in the world and has grown to have more than 18,000 employees, including all of its subsidiaries. Its products are used in computers with applications to CAD/CAM, home-users, telecommunications, office automation, graphics display, networking and data processing.Although Micron Technologies did venture into other business pursuits such as selling computer systems, it generates 85% of its sales from dynamic random-access memories (DRAM's), flash memories, and memory modules. The company also currently manufactures Extended Data Out (EDO) DRAM, SDRAM, DDR DRAM, and RDRAM, as well as custom designed memory architectures for communications and graphics applications and low-power DRAM's for wireless and consumer products. (Micron Website) In its SRAM product line Micron has SyncBurst, Zero Bus Turnaround, Quad Data Rate, and DDR memories. The Flash memory line contains Flash/ SRAM combinations, SyncFlash and CompactFlash devices.On the Micron Website, the company mission is stated to be "the most efficient and innovative global provider of semiconductor memory solutions." They attribute their success in the semiconductor industry to exactly that as well. They exemplified their mission through their relatively to the competition short cycle times, high yields, low production costs, and extremely small die sizes. Micron provides a product line that is ever increasing with a target on matching the requisites of a niche market. DRAM, the main memory type that the company manufactures, is the largest single consumption category in the semiconductor market. With 21% of that market worldwide, Micron is the largest producer of such memory, according to Dataquest (June 2001.)Also helping the company become a leader in the semiconductor industry is the uniqueness and quality of their product. The list of awards bestowed upon Micron from its various clients is lengthy and impressive. The awards include some from Fujitsu, Dell, Compaq, Gateway, 3com, Texas Instruments, Philips, and Sun Microsystems among others.
