Milk: Does It Really Do the Body Good?"Everyone that useths milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongeth to the that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil."- King James Version of The Holy Bible, HEBREWS: 5:13-14Milk, in all its glory, has become synonymous with America, Mom, and apple pie. Too bad for us, because milk could actually be the cause of many ailments we suffer from as adults and more so as children. Were you ever told by your parents and teachers that milk does the body good? Were you ever told that milk builds strong bones and helps you grow? Were you ever told that milk is a good source of protein? Although we have been taught this since elementary school, here are some facts that are contradicting to the aforementioned statements.Milk does the body good.Children start to learn the Four Basic Food Groups in elementary school which includes: Protein, grains, vegetables/fruit and milk. They also learn that ice cream and chocolate pudding belong to the milk group. What they do not learn is that cheese is high in fat and cholesterol.The consumption of milk and dairy products have been linked to a variety of problems. According to Dr. Frank Oski, "? the drinking of cow milk has been linked to iron-deficiency anemia in infants and children' it has been named as the cause of cramps and diarrhea in much of the world's population, and the cause of multiple forms of allergy as well ? " (3). Because of the lack of knowledge on behalf of the consumers, lactose intolerance has evolved to epidemic proportions.Lactose intolerance is the most talked about symptom of milk that I have personally come across when the subject is raised. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) has listed lactose intolerance as one of eight reasons to eliminate dairy products from your diet:Lactose intolerance is common among many population, affecting approximately 95 percent of Asian Americans, 74 percent of Native Americans, 70 percent of African Americans, 53 percent of Mexican Americans, and 15 percent of Caucasians. Symptoms, which include gastrointestinal distress, diarrhea, and flatulence, occur because these individuals do not have the enzymes that digest the milk sugar lactose. Additionally, along with unwanted symptoms, milk drinkers are also putting themselves at risk for development of other chronic diseases and ailments.In an influential book, written by a former fourth generation dairy farmer and cattle rancher, Howard F. Lyman with Glen Merzer stated that he, like other dairy and cattle farmers, poisoned his animals and polluted his farms (11).For example:· Cattle ranchers turned cows into cannibals. Until August 1997, cattle were routinely fed the remains of other cows.
