Marxism is the belief that human consciousness is a product of one’s economic conditions, social class, and that relationships with others are often determined by those factors. It also implies that the weak or less-fortunate are always exploited and taken advantage of by the richer and more powerful and people should work toward a society in which there are no classes and everyone is equal. (Merriam) Feminism is organized activity on behalf of women's rights and interests, believing that there should be equal rights for all women regardless of race, creed, economic conditions, educational status, physical appearance, or ability. (Merriam) In the play “A Doll House” by Henrik Ibsen, it has been debated for many years which of these factions are being referenced by the playwright. In this essay, I will show that through symbolism and characters, Ibsen’s play is a representation of Marxism; based on money and power, not Feminism.
From the beginning and throughout this play, Hendrik Ibsen has symbolism revolving around money. In the beginning of ACT I, Ibsen paints a picture in the opening scene of a couple that is influenced and driven by money. Nora and Torvald Helmer live in a home with “a piano…porcelain stove…engravings on the wall…an étagère with china figures….a small bookcase with richly bound books…the floor carpeted” (1710). Ibsen’s wording is used to indicate wealth and the expensive worldly things that they own. Also in ACT I, Torvald gives his wife, Nora, forty dollars; which was a lot of money at that time further suggesting they are of upper-class status. Subsequently, Nora then asks for more money so that she can “hang the bills in gilt paper on the Christmas Tree” (1711). The Christmas tree decorated with bills symbolizes her obsession with money. Furthermore, Witham and Lutterbie wrote about how “Even Dr. Rank speaks about his failing health and imminent death by using financial terms. ‘These...
