Mission statements are meant to inspire and convey direction that the organization intends to stay on.”Through a mission statement, policies and procedures, a proper management style, and direction, criminal justice administrators attempt to ensure that the organization maintains its overall goals of crime treatment and suppression, and that it works amicably with other organizations and people” (Peak, p. 25). Mission statements are a written declaration that reflects the core purpose behind who the organization is and what they stand for. It encompasses the important elements and keeps people within the organization on the same page, defining what is important, the goals, and excludes the unimportant.
Each Police department across the nation serves the same basic duties which include (but not limited to); keeping the peace, protect and serve, deter criminal acts, enforcing the law, crime prevention, all while adhering to their ethical code of honor. While they may be similar in duties and responsibilities, their mission statements differ slightly. Those differences could be due to the differences in their communities. They each have things they value more and goals that suit their own departments. Having lived on the coast of Mississippi, Virginia Beach, Virginia and Greenville, South Carolina, I chose those three police departments mission statements to evaluate.
The Biloxi Police Departments motto is “Justice with dignity”, according to their mission statement they are “committed to providing the city with progressive, reliable and citizen-oriented police service in the most professional and timely manner possible” (BPD, ). Simple and straight to the point. What about honor? And ethics? Though their mission statement shows values pertaining to response times, safe guarding citizens and professionalism, I would definitely revamp it to include “with honor and ethical behavior”. At-least something along those lines. To me, I think being “progressive”, when it comes to police departments, is forever changing policies and procedures. Change is good especially when it comes to keeping up with technology and techniques in law enforcement. All-in –all they provided a clear statement for the Biloxi Police Department-
Virginia Beach Police Department is “committed to providing a safe community and improving the quality of life for all people. We accomplish this by delivering quality police services and enforcing laws with equity and impartiality. In partnership with the community, we reduce crime through public education, prevention, and awareness. In meeting this objective, we demand of ourselves the highest professional standards and dedication to our core values. (VBPD, ) Their core values are; professionalism, respect, integrity, dedication, and excellence in everything they do. Personally, I love what they value and what they stand for.
