Physics is the study of matter and how it behaves to gain a better understanding of how the universe works as a whole. Modern Physics is considered to be physics that was discovered after the beginning of the twentieth century or post Newtonian conception of physics. Since about the 1890 there have been paradigm shifts that caused the development of modern physics such as quantum mechanics and Einstein relativity. Contributions of many scientists lead to the development of modern physics such as Max Planck who is considered to be the originator of quantum theory. Quantum mechanics is one of the first subsections of modern physics and deals with the behavior of matter on the level of atoms and subatomic particles. One of the major arguments that quantum physics had resolved was a debate between Isaac Newton and Christian Huygens, which was about if light was a wave or a particle. Isaac theory that light was a particle only was disproven by Thomas Young’ double-slit experiment which demonstrated that light has wave-like properties.Light has caused major controversy in the scientific community of Modern physics since it exhibits both wave and particle properties and is understood to have dual natures. Visible light is electromagnetic radiation that is visible to the human eye, and is responsible for the sense of sight. In 1900, Max Planck was working on the problem of how the radiation an object emits is related to its temperature. He came up with a formula that agreed very closely with experimental data, but the formula only made sense if he assumed that the energy of a vibrating molecule was quantized.
The photoelectric effect is when light is shone upon a metal it causes the metal to emit electrons. Electrons emitted in this manner may be called photoelectrons. In a classical interpretation, it was said that the amplitude or the wavelength would determine how many electrons emitted from the metal. Instead, it turned out that when light passes a threshold frequency that it is able to have the electrons emit from the metal and that if it didn’t reach the threshold than no electrons will emit no matter the amplitude or the intensity of the wave. Using this information Albert Einstein inferred that the photoelectric effect was caused by discrete quantized packets or particles of light known as photons. This discovery would lead to the ground work of quantum mechanics and also to the theory of the wave-particle duality. Even though photons are considered to be particles of light even though they are very different from normal particle since they have no mass, but still have finite momentum and cannot be held at rest in the hand.
One of the central concepts of quantum mechanics is the theory of the wave-particle duality, which is the theory that all matter exhibits properties of waves and of particles under certain conditions, these are known as quantum particles. Quantum particles act like particles, in that they are discrete chunks of energy and can be found in one place only. Quantum particles also act like waves because they show the effects like diffraction and interference.
The other revolutionary development that contributed to the beginning of modern physics is in 1905 Einstein’s theory of relativity, which surpassed a 200-year-old theory of mechanics created primarily by Isaac Newton.
