In today's complex and challenging business world, motivating employees in theworkplace has been an ongoing challenge and study. Motivation is directly associatedwith an organizations success. Businesses that excel invest in their people, create adynamic corporate culture and foster an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration.Motivating employees in the workplace is less challenging than most managers believe.Motivation is a key factor in organizational success, and it can be accomplished byusing four simple yet effective steps such as: increasing confidence, providing trust,bringing a sense of satisfaction to each individual employee, and maintaining discipline.However, when going about these steps, managers have to first analyze the problemsassociated with their employees, and their organization. You have to encourage youremployees to do what you actually want them to do.In large corporations, motivation has been for the most part abandoned becauseof massive restructuring, re-engineering, and downsizing. The explanation for this isthat the level of trust and commitment that is required for motivation, and necessary foremployees to apply the extra effort, has been greatly damaged. When properlymotivated, employees tend to exert an increased amount of effort for longer periods oftime towards a particular goal. Companies have begun to realize this and actaccordingly to benefit the company and its desired long term objectives. The factorsthat are believed to motivate an employee greatly differ from person to person, andcompany to company. There are two main categories that are used to proposemotivation theories, they are content theories and process theories. Content theoriesexplain the dynamics of employee needs, and process theories describe the way needdeficiencies are translated into behavior. Both of these theories are used to reducetension. For content theories of motivation, companies recognize that motivation beginswith the needs of the individual. Abraham Maslow proposed the theory called hierarchyof needs theory. Maslow believed that each person has five categories of needs,physiological needs or basic needs for the body, such as food shelter drink rest etc.,safety needs where the basic needs are reasonably satisfied we turn to thinking aboutprotection from danger, security and order so that we feel safe. These safety needs canbe a concern for physical safety but also covers psychological safety needs such as jobsecurity etc., social needs once the first two needs are reasonably satisfied, socialneeds such as needing acceptance, giving and receiving affection and "belonging"become things that people want, ego needs next comes people's need forachievement, self esteem, self confidence, respect and status, self actualization needsfinally at the top of the hierarchy once all of the other levels have been reasonablysatisfied is the need to become the person that we feel that we are capable ofbecoming.
