In dentistry there are three main types of mouth guards. The first one is the Stock mouth protector. This protector is preformed and it comes ready to wear immediately. These ones can be bought at department stores and are fairly inexpensive. When you get one of these guards it is not easy to adjust or fit in the mouth since they are sold at stores. In some instances they do not offer or provide much safety or protection, and with this dentist do not recommend these for their patients. Some other names for guards include; bite plane, bite splint, gum guard, gum shield, mouth piece, mouth protector, night guard, and occlusal splint.

In dental, mouth guards can be used for; grinding of the teeth, and bruxism; which is grinding, clenching, or gnash your teeth while awake and sleeping. With these there are many types of mouth guards. You have the mouth guard that you wear for sports, a night guard, an NTI appliance, this is an appliance that is a tension suppression system, it means that it prevents the clenching action of the mouth.
The application of the mouth guard is fairly easy. With the use of the mouth guard you are saving yourself from pain and keeping your pearly whites nice and shiny. The use of a mouth guard can help cushion teeth against injury, it protects against jaw and joint injuries, also protects against soft tissue injuries, and helps prevent neck and jaw injuries and in some cases it can help reduce a concussion.
It is very important that a mouth guard has these five important characteristics to ensure that they work properly. It should remain in place, provides maximum protection, shouldn’t interfere with breathing or speech, comfortable while wearing the piece and easy to clean. Mouth guards are very safe and provide protection. With that, there are some disadvantages to wearing the mouth guard.
