One may not realize the ample amount of mathematics that is included all genres of music. Music is the art of arranging sounds in harmony, melody, and rhythm in time to produce a continuous composition. Although there is not legitimate proof of where and when music originated, it is has played a part of everyone’s history.

Mathematics is the study of the measurement, properties, relationships of quantities and sets, using numbers and symbols. Mathematics were originated by the Pythagoreans in the 6th century BC. Over time, different nationalities added their own contributions to the study of mathematics. Pythagoreans are also the first to study the aspect of musical scales.

For instance, if one were to have a sequence of numbers such as 1,3,5,7,9…..the obvious pattern shows that these are all odd numbers added by two to get the next number. A sequence that is well-known and used by musicians, especially pianist, is called The Fibonacci sequence. This sequence helps pianist identify each white key on a piano.

Research shows that young children who are trained to study the art of music are highly intelligent, especially in mathematics. Very few children have the ability to play songs on a piano without previous training are often referred to as “child prodigies”. They also have a very high IQ because of the amount of stimulation the brain receives. This shows that even though their interest may not be in math, their ability to learn it increases because of the stimulation that occurs from the same part of the brain without them evening knowing it. But, just because one is trained in music or trained to play instruments does not always guarantee that that person is excellent in the study of mathematics. Some who have been trained in music specialties have stated that although math is not one of their favorite topics, they still have a reluctantly high knowledge of the subject. Other researchers believe that sight reading is the component that increases math capabilities simply because of the analysis of the notes. The symbols used to read music are all the same even though one may be playing different instruments. The skill is not technically “reading” music, it is how to mathematically decipher spaces. Their beliefs that reading sight music challenges the mathematical function of the brain, opposed to the natural stimulation from playing music. A math teacher proved by experiment, that playing Mozart in his class while teaching his students improved their math grades significantly. This is now named the Mozart Effect. Music theorists have once called mathematics the basis of sound. Spatial temporal (ST) reasoning and Language analytic (LA) reasoning are two important reasons that one’s brain uses to solve problems. Studies revealed...
