Music Education Essay

Music education is a class taught in elementary, middle, high school, and even college. There are many different forms of music education such as: band, choir, and general music. In most middle schools across America, students are required to take some sort of music class. Then once you get into high school you are able to chose whether you want to take part in music education or not. You also do not have to take any form of music classes when you enter college. Same with music classes, their “practices” are usually during class (with the occasional afterschool practice) so students have to show up to school to be a part of the group. According to a poll taken in 2006 by high school principals, schools that have music programs have a graduation rate of ninety point two percent, and schools without music education programs have a graduation percentage of seventy-two point nine. Schools that have successful music programs have higher graduation rates than schools with average programs. Successful, meaning schools that compete and do things other than just concerts. Music education keeps students competitive and successful in school and in life.

When a student decides to join a group such as band or choir, most of the time they’re making a commitment not only to themselves but to every single other student in that group. Take marching band for example; the teens spend the whole summer outside in the boiling heat, practicing to make a show that they can perform and be proud of. Each person out on the field has a specific job and if one person does not show up for a performance it affects every other person, not just themselves. That’s why the graduation rate is higher. Most people wouldn’t want to let their team down. Also, when someone works for something such as a performance for so long, they wouldn’t just want to not show up for it.

Music education causes students to be a better student. Students learn to be focused in class. Everything musicians do, they try to do perfectly. “The thing people forget, he said, is that musicians are assessed every time they play an instrument. “If you went to a concert and they only played 80 percent of the notes correctly, you wouldn't like it," he said. "Musicians strive for perfection. Lots of people don't mind 80 percent on a math quiz." (John J. Mahlmann). The main reason music classes aren’t as important as classes like math and science is because you can test for those classes. You can’t test for music. (Washingtonpost.com)

Students also tend to have a higher self-esteem and self-discipline. “Low self-esteem is believed to underlie a myriad of diverse problems such as academic underachievement, academic overachievement, drug addition, violent behavior, teenage pregnancy, and criminal behavior.” (Reynolds) Teachers/directors are constantly encouraging their students to do better. In most cases the teacher doesn’t give up until the student can get the music right that way they can move on with the piece of music. Once the student sees that they can do it, it helps to higher their self-esteem. In other classes, teachers just teach their subjects and move on. Very rarely will you find a teacher that will take the time to make sure every single person in the class is doing it right. Each person in a musical performance is important.
