As one gets older, their body changes dramatically in height, eye sight, memory, attention, weight, women go through menopause, and men go through reproductive changes. During middle age, vision and hearing both decline. The lens of the eye enlarges and becomes less flexible and less transparent, making it more difficult to perceive images in sharp focus and to see in dim light. The number of rods and cones, used to detect light and color, in the eye diminish to half by the age of sixty impairing vision. The consequences of these changes are most evident in vision for reading. There are major health problems that arise in middle adulthood such as osteoporosis, atherosclerosis, and cancers such as breast, colon, or lung cancer. Health problems are inevitable; however some behaviors increase the speed of the process. Osteoporosis is a condition, common in women, in which the bones become thin and brittle as a result of calcium depletion. Estrogen levels deplete after menopause so it’s more common for women to get it before men. Although biological factors contribute greatly to osteoporosis, lifestyle choices also make a difference. Risks that speed up osteoporosis are smoking, high alcohol consumption, poor diet, and low rates of physical activity. Another health problem is atherosclerosis which is the buildup of plaque in the arteries. The plaque inhibits the blood from circulating throughout the body and the heart. Cardiovascular disease risk is increased with high fat diets and smoking. Cancer is another health problem that can rise in some middle aged adults. Cancer is the second leading cause of death among adults being lung, breast, colon, and lung cancer. Cancer is caused by abnormal cell production, exposure to too much sunlight, exposure to radiation, and exposure to hazardous chemicals. A lifestyle factor that increases the risk of getting cancer is smoking.
