Jung 4Tae Hyun JungMr. EatonLiterature 2, Unit1Sep, 9, 2014The Interlopers and The Bass, The River, and Sheila MantThe short story "The Interlopers" talks about two families, Gradwitz family and Znaeym family that had been fighting over a land for decades and starts to hunt for each other, but after a falling tree immobilize them, they befriend each other just before wolves attack.Next, the story "The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant" is about a boy who met a girl named Sheila Mant. The boy asks Sheila to go to Dixford to hear a band, but at the end, the boy regrets what he has done that day due to several reasons.There are mostly differences, but also some similarities between these two story's characters. The characters in the story "The Interlopers" is Ulrich von Gradwitz is the main character of this story who is a wealthy landowner. He has right to spread his land but knows that Georg continues to hunt on this land. Therefore, he has organized a group of men to find Georg during the night to kill Georg. He regards Georg as his enemy. However, they both got trapped under the tree due to the thunder and Ulrich offers Georg some of his wine which is the first time. Next Georg Znaeym is also the main character of the story who is one of the small landowners. He has refused to accept the judgment of the courts about a disputed piece of land. He later accepts Ulrich's offer of becoming friends.The character in the story "The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant" is the boy whose 14 years old and loves fishing for largemouth bass. He fell love on Sheila Mant and spends his time to ask Sheila for a date. Sheila Mant is a 17 years old girl and their family is renting the cottage next to his family. She doesn't know the boy living there and only talks to older college boys. In the both of the story, the main characters are having internal and external conflicts. For example, in the story "The Interlopers", the two main characters are having external problem with each other with the land and wolves at the end. Also, in the story "The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant" the boy is having internal conflict about choosing whether the girl Sheila Mant or the big bass, because the boy realized that the she hates fishing and at the same moment, a big bass strikes. If he chooses to catch the bass, it means he ignores her opinion."The Interlopers" takes place in the middle of a dark forest which is located in the eastern edge of the Carpathian Mountains. Also, it says that "wind-scourged winter night" which can help readers to predict how cold the weather is. During the story, the mood was mostly fierce. In contrast, the setting of the "The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant" is the Hanover river is located in Vermont where there are many summer homes.
