My Life In Pink Directed By Alain Berliner

Ma vie en rose (English translation: My Life in Pink) is a 1997 Belgian drama film directed by Alain Berliner. The film is about Ludovic, a young transgender girl who is seen by her family and community as a boy, but chooses to express herself as a girl and her family's struggle as they attempt to accept her gender. It comes as no surprise to me that a film like this would come out of Belgium. As it has frequently been referred to as one of the most LGBT friendly countries in the world, even as far back as the 1700s.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) rights in Belgium are some of the most progressive in the entire world. Same-sex sexual activity has been completely legal since ...view middle of the document...

The film is bright and intelligent and instead of asking why, asks why not? Sexuality isn't even an issue at Ludovic's age so The film shows little interest in exploring it. Instead The film chooses to focus on childhood and the wonder and innocence that comes along with it. The film does an amazing job of expressing this visually as well, as The film is filled with bright visuals and happy fantasies that take us right into Ludo's world/mind. Ludovic chooses to express themselves by wearing dresses and make-up, and obviously associates these things as the traits of women as most people in the world would. In a perfect world, Ludovic would be able to enjoy these things without giving up his masculinity. However, sadly Ludovic must unconsciously choose sides as the world often makes people chose one or the other.
One could see the film as a critique on a society that reacts with a herd mentality toward anything in the least unusual (such as America), even if it's become socially acceptable in their society. Ludovic is a very intriguing child: they're barely into school, he has become convinced that he is a girl, and in his childhood innocence (or perhaps one could blame it on the generally LGBT friendly country) sees absolutely nothing wrong with the idea. However I do feel that the reactions of the community to this revelation to be unrealistic. The idea that the whole neighbourhood would band together to ostracise a family who has a 7-year old boy who likes to wear dresses and play with dolls is hard to believe. ESPECIALLY in such an LGBT friendly country, but I suppose liberties must be taken with film.
As I said I'm very impressed by how maturely and realisticly (for the most part) the film tackles this subject (no surprise coming from a very LGBT friendly country). If this were an American movie, it would be treated like an after-school special. By the third act, all of Ludovic's peers would've learned their lesson about being intolerant, embraced them with open arms, you'd hear some cheesy score and he'd make some "uplifting speech”, all that unrealistic campy crap. In Ma Vie En Rose However there's rarely a moment where anyone treats Ludovic with much respect, as it probably would be in real life. Kids and young people are...
