My Three Favorite Texts Essay

902 words - 4 pages

In normal English classes at Worland High School you read a large quantity of stories. Like everything else there is usually only a few that you like, it may take a little for you to realize that you like these, but you find out eventually. It may take a writing assessment like this very one for you to actually think about it, but they are there. I know that there are several students that like the three that I do, which are; MacBeth, Beowulf, and Gulliver’s Travels. These three stood out to me because I see the same concept in each of them. All three of the text stand out to me because I’m an athlete and I see that you get what you put in, and if you’re too cocky it will come back and kick you in the butt.
The first story I will be analysing is MacBeth, MacBeth got cocky and it kicked him in the butt pretty hard. Like in every sport, if you get told that you’re all that and you are going to be the best you start really thinking it and think you can slack off in practice. Well this kind of thing happened to MacBeth because he just became the “Thane of Glamis” and he met up with some witches that gave him a prophecy. “All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis!/All hail, MacBeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor!/All hail, MacBeth, that shalt be King hereafter!” (line 48-50 page 327) In the end of all of this he got killed because he killed the current King so he could become King, I think if the witches claimed that he was going to become King he would have became King no matter how it happened. MacBeth took the easy way and killed everyone that stood in his way instead of working for what he deserved.
The next story, Beowulf, has the same concept, but its more like those athletes that are more held back when they know they are great. Beowulf is a great hero and doesn’t take it to heart and starts to get cocky, it also shows true moral. When some people get into a fight they bring a gun to a knife fight, when Beowulf tries to fight as fair as he can, like when he fights Grendel, Grendel has no weapons so Beowulf says that he will fight with no sword or armor so it will be a fair fight. This is a brave gesture beings that he grows up being told that he is great, “Of my youth have been filled with glory. Now Grendel’s/Name has echoed in our...
