On May 16, 2014 Narendra Modi was elected in a landslide victory as the newest Prime Minister of India. The largest victory in more than thirty years, Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 282 seats in Parliament and will have majority rule. Modi enters office after a successful term as the Chief Minister of the Indian state Gujarat. While in office, Modi ushered in many new developments that have helped spur economic revitalization in the state. Because Modi has little foreign policy experience, it is difficult to predict what his relationship will be like with the international community. After graduating college, Modi continued to pursue his political aspirations. In 1985, Modi was assigned by the RSS to work in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or the “Indian People’s Party. Extremely nationalistic, the BJP is one of the two main political parties in India. In 1988, Modi was elected as the organizing secretary of the BJP in the state of Gujarat. While in this position, Modi was instrumental in helping the BJP secure a much needed victory in the 1995 Indian election. Due to this success, Modi was given the position as the National Secretary of the BJP and assigned the responsibility of overseeing the party’s activities in New Dehli. Finally, in 1998, Modi was given the title of the General Secretary of the BJP where he was responsible for all of the party’s activities in India. Because of his ability to mend fractions within the party and the local communities, Modi received much of the credit for orchestrating the BJP winning the 1998 state elections.
Despite winning the election, the BJP came under fire from 1998 to 2001 because of allegations of corruption, abuse of power and poor leadership from the central leaders of the party. With support for the party waning, the BJP promoted Modi to be the Chief Minister of the state of Gujarat in October 2001. Modi served three terms as the Chief Minster of Gujarat until his election as Prime Minister of India in May 2014.
Narendra Modi’s Political Record: The Good
As Chief Minister, Modi has revitalized the economy of Gujarat. According to The Economist, Modi has led a state of 60 million people that accounts for only 5% of India’s population to produce about 25% of the country’s total exports. In addition, the state’s GDP has increased exponentially and income inequality in Gujarat has significantly improved. Over the last two decades, India’s economy has rapidly grown due to economic liberalization reforms like privatization of state owned businesses, increase in foreign investment and industrial regulation. Given Modi’s strong record in improving the economy in Gujarat, the international community and India are hoping that this trend continues while he is Prime Minister. India is the second most populous country in the world and has the 10th largest GDP; however, the divide between the wealthy and the poor continues to plague the country.
In addition to being seen as a potential financial savior, Modi has also led many development projects through Gujarat. For starters, when Modi became Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2002 the state had many villages that lacked the most basic of needs: electricity. Currently, every village in Gujarat now has electricity. Additionally, Modi led a successful campaign to encourage non-governmental organizations and the local communities in creating infrastructure necessary for the conservation of groundwater. Given that Gujarat is primarily an agriculture community it is imperative that the state have the correct systems in place to thrive. Prior...
