The majority of us worry about getting enough exercise, but there is such a thing as too much exercise. Exercising regularly is healthy, but more is not always better and in some cases, compulsive exercise can be just as dangerous as eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia.
Anorexia Nervosa has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder. (Van Buskirk 529) "For many patients who starve, purge, or mutilate themselves, the body is speaking death," how true is this statement? (Farber, S 289) Anorexia is a disease and it should be treated as such. Death is the only end result if a person goes untreated long term. We as a society need to realize that a proper exercise and diet are the only solutions to getting the desired physique.
Anorexia can be recognized in a person rather quickly. The most obvious sign is the ultimate unhealthy thin body. Trying to understand anorexia was said to be “complex and multidetermined” by researchers Paul Garfinkel and David Garner. Technically a person has to weigh less than 70% of their own body weight to be classified as being anorexic. (Beidel, D and Bulik, C) There are two types of anorexia nervosa – restricting and eating/ purging. These can come in the forms of starvation, eating a tremendously low calorie diet daily, purging one’s self after over eating. and/or the over use of laxatives in order to lose undesired weight. Generally people who have the personality traits of being neurotic, obsessive, and/ or perfectionist typically tend to be the people who are more likely to develop this disorder. (Beidel, D and Bulik, C) Anorexia can be linked to people who have undergone some type of trauma or depression. They also are more likely to resist treatment. (Beidel, D and Bulik, C)
Some researchers have speculated that anorexia nervosa is a new disorder that is just now becoming prevalent. But the text clearly states that anorexia can be traced all the way back to France in the 1347. (Beidel, D and Bulik, C) So this has always been an issue. The pressure of today’s society has continued to increase this disease. The expectations and the desperate need to feel thin because "thin is in" and lets "show more skin" drives many women and men to emaciate their bodies in order to feel accepted. Initially it was reported that anorexia was mainly found in the high class social class. But recently it is shown to be evenly spaced among the different social classes. (Beidel, D and Bulik, C) Anorexia is common among women and men but more women suffer from it than men.
A person who is suffering from anorexia often is not aware that they are putting themselves in danger. They can never truly see that they are in fact sick and in need of psychological help. Instead they continue to starve, purge, and selfishly rob there bodies of nutrition’s that they desperately need. Their risk of suicide is higher and they suffer from “intrusions into their states of consciousness” which means that...
