Islamic Law regarding Neighbors
What is the criterion to determine neighbors?
“Serve Allah, and join not any partners with Him; and do good- to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, those in need, neighbors who are near, neighbors who are strangers, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (ye meet), and what your right hands possess: For Allah loveth not the arrogant, the vainglorious.” (Holy Quran 4:36)
Hazrat Hassan (Radi Allahu Anho) defined neighbors as “Forty houses to the left, forty houses to the right, forty houses in front and forty houses behind your house.". So according to the above saying it means at least 40 houses in all direction are considered neighbors. Additionally there are three ranks of neighbors in accordance to the Islamic Law. With highest one first the order goes this way:
1. Muslim Relative
2. Either a Muslim or Relative (Non-Believer)
3. Neither Muslim nor Relative
According to a Hadith, Holy Prophet (PBUH) said“…Gabriel kept on recommending me to treat neighbors kindly and politely so that I thought that Allah would order [me] to make them [my] heirs.” (Sunan Abu Dawood)

If one of your neighbors is an immoral one then it never gives you the authority to do the same with him instead being nice. For example if they shout you talk politely, they always see you with hatred you send them gifts. All these righteous deeds shall be rewarded by Allah Almighty if not here then definitely in the Hereafter. Besides that even your rude neighbor may one day change their attitude by feeling ashamed and that will be the real success.
• Key to Paradise:
Almighty Allah’s beloved Messenger (PBUH) has clearly stated that a person who is not good to his neighbors (i.e. the neighbor feels insecure because of the wrong or teasing attitude) then such person shall not enter paradise (Sahih Muslim). After all under Islamic Law great emphasize is upon code of act.
Today you help others then they shall be there to help you tomorrow. But in case you are rude towards them then don’t expect help from them when you are in need.
• Convert to Islam:
