There are both leaders and followers in this world, no matter which you are it is undeniable that without the leaders society would fall apart. Leadership as defined in the dictionary is “ a person who guides or directs a group”, although accurate this simple sentence does not give justice to the importance of leadership. People need to be guided and have someone to look up to, and whether you are born with leadership or acquire it the way you utilize it is the most critical. There are and have been many impressive leaders in this world but one who stands out is Nelson Mandela. Most leaders come from a background which sets them up for greatness, yet Nelson Mandela having a more traditional African upbringing and experiencing the hardships of jail has a deeper knowledge and understanding. This is another trade he exemplified through his work, understanding, he respected the emotions of others as they work and live. He showed his characteristic of understanding through forgiveness, although being forced to labor in the sun and sit in jail by his enforcers he does not blame them the jail guards for keeping him separated from the world. He was able to have a deeper understanding of the motives of others and relinquish them from any remorse they feel for doing such wicked things. He carried this compassion over with him as president using it in his next characteristic communication. He communicated flawlessly with the public informing his people on every and all actions. Through his words and writing he eloquently stated his opinion on equality in South Africa, along with being able to listen to others and their ideas. Through this listening and valuing the input of others his management style is very clear.
Based on these character traits and his actions in the community it can be seen that Nelson Mandela most likely used a mixed managment still being both assertive and democratic although he probably leaned more towards and strategic style. Madiba saw that in order to have a changed in the rights africans had in south Africa someone needed to speak up, which shows his more assertive ways. He straightforward knew exactly how he wanted to handle things, even if this meant punishment or jail time. Although he was able to take control and lead South Africa as a president very sure of himself he also was able to listen to others and allow them to work without taking such a tight reign.
