The average person does not think about nerve agents, how it affects people and the environment they live in. To be quite honest, I think it’s pretty safe to assume that people choose not to think about this type of agent or any agent for that matter simply because they are fully aware of the fact that the consequences of encountering this substance are deadly and no matter which way you look at it the outcome will almost never be a positive one. There’s also a major concern about nerve agents especially when it comes to terrorist’s using them as Weapons of Mass Destruction. When it passes via inhalation, the nerve agents enter through the respiratory system. It successfully enters the blood stream rapidly and respiratory failure tends to be the primary cause of death after being exposed to nerve agents.
Nerve agents come in different forms and are made up of certain properties. For example depending on the clarity, nerve agents can be colorless (or have some faintly colored liquids). They are clear and may or may not have an odor. If there is any kind of odor it’s has something of a faded sweet smell and if there’s no odor then of course there wouldn’t be any scent at all. They dissolve at a variety of rates and become much more intense than air could ever be and as a result they all gather in very low areas. Nerve agents consist of sarin (GB), tabun (GA), soman (GD) and VX. When it comes to the environment the “G” agents is the one that is the most unpredictable liquid and at the same time it does not stay in the environment for a long period of time. The “VX” agent is the one that is known for being highly persistent and as a result it is a little more predictable. When comparing both the “VX” and the “G” agent against one another, the “VX” is much deadlier and persistent than that of the “G” agent.
When individuals are exposed to a small amount nerve agent poisoning, some of the symptoms they experience are contraction of the pupils, a runny nose, deterioration of visual accommodation, slurred speech, nausea, headaches, pronounced chest pains, hallucinations and an increase in the production of saliva. Now, in situations where individuals are exposed to larger doses, that person would instantly go into convulsions and die from the suffocation due to the nervous and respiratory systems shutting down at the same time. Ways that people can protect themselves from nerve agents is to get out of the area as soon as possible without going through the contaminated area.
