New technologies allow more flexibility, an alternative when students miss class, online review of content (Gomis-Porqueras, P. et.al, 2011). In addition, new technologies can improve students’ learning depending on how the instructor uses the technology and the age of the students. An article written by Susan O’Hara and Robert Pritchard states students’ scores improve with technology. One example of improvement in scores is the Reporter Project where sixth grade students showed significant improvement in specific skills such as identifying main idea, supporting details and cause of effect relationship (O’Hara & Pritchard, 20…). Although students attendance may drop slightly because students are able to use other sources outside of class to obtain course content, overall this does not cause a drastic decrease in class attendance. In addition, a survey conducted of the NUS students, 80% said the webcast lectures helped them to better understand course material even though it did not necessarily improve their scores. A survey given to GATech students, out of 124, 54% stated the webcast lectures helped them study better; students who used eClass said they studied about the same amount with only 6% reporting an increase in their level of performance (Deal, A., 2007). Therefore, using multimedia for college level students do not make a significant difference in learning.
Now, using PowerPoint as a means of multimedia, a study conducted by Hossein Nouri and Abdus Shahid shows there is little difference between using PowerPoint in a classroom setting versus a traditional class with printed material (Nouri, H. & Shahid, A., n.d.). A study of two classes for one semester shows using PowerPoint has no significant difference in improving short-term memory in students; however, the study did indicate that for short-term memory, other factors may need to be considered such as the topic of the class as well as learning styles. For instance, students who are more visual learners may recall information better than those who are not. As for long-term memory, there was no effect on students who were instructed with PowerPoint than those who were not (Nouri, H. & Shahid, A., n.d.).
On the other hand, researchers have found in younger children that technology “enhance literacy development, impact language acquisition, provide greater access to information, support learning, motivate students, and enhance their self-esteem” (O’Hara, S. & Pritchard, R., 2014).
