Mass media is a microsystem that influence on a person’s values, beliefs, attitudes, and behavior. Mass media is a form of communication that is viewed by large audiences through medium such as TV, newspaper, book, and internet. Television is the most influential form of media and the way it has impacted on children’s lives. The two children television show that I will be discussing is The Spectacular Spider-Man and The Fairly OddParents. We will look at it content and the hidden message that these two television show is conveying to young children.
In the Spectacular Spider-Man, the episode Group Therapy show started out with the villains trying to escape from prison and planning to take down Spider-Man. Peter who is Spider-Man is wearing a black spider suit rather than his regular red spider suit to fight off the vicious villains. The black spider suit has taken over his body and had fought with the villains the night before. When he wakes up in the morning he felt his whole body aching but cannot remember why. Upon from waking up, he read on the morning news paper that Spider-Man has taken down the villain last night. Even though he was the one fighting the villain he has no memory of the fight. The episode end when one of Peter’s co-workers knocks at his door and let him knows that his Grandma May is in the hospital because of a heart attack.
From watching the episode of Spectacular Spider-Man I noticed that there was a lot of violent and negative messages/treatment. There were a few prosocial behaviors such as Spider-Man trying to protect the civilians, Peter helping his Grandma May on chore, and a friend of Grandma May helping her during the heart attack. Violent acts and negative messages/treatment is very obvious in this show. There were a lot of fighting between Spider-Man versus the villains and the cops versus the villains. Things were being blow up and destroyed by the villains. Laws and rules were being broken. Villains were name calling and cursing at each other. The stereotype on this show is that villains look all deformed but in reality bad guy can look normal too. I also notice that this show is a little bit sexist in that in the police force there was only one female cop and the rest were male cops.
In my opinion, the Spectacular Spider-Man is not appropriate for young children. The show has too much violence and negative messages that it may convey a wrong message to young children. Children learn from watching TV show and if a show has too much violence in it, young children will think its okay to have that kind of behavior. In Cultivation Theory it stated that “the more time one is exposed to violence, the more likely that individual will engage in violent acts” (Berns, 2013). Thus, young children may engage in imaginative play and act out on the violent behavior that they see in TV. Also repetition and exposure to violence can result in what we call desensitization. This is when young children become less sensitive to...
