Human Resources are vital to the success of companies, no matter if the company producers tangible products, or is a service provider. Hiring and retaining the workforce is an essential function of Human Resources. Finding the right employee for the position ensures the longevity of employment. Nike has a solid human resources division and offers employment in many areas, with added incentives and benefits that allow the company to maintain a healthy workforce.
Nike’s workforce is 30,000 plus, and contracts with other manufacturers that employee more than 800,000 people in forty-six different countries. (Nike Biz. 2013) Nike focuses on maintaining a strong human resources relationship with their employees. A recent survey conducted by Nike rated their performance and relationship with their workforce. The survey was online and in twenty-nine languages. (Nike Biz. 2013) The knowledge Nike gleaned from the survey assists the human resources department in focusing on the areas that need improvement.
Nike focuses on “helping employees and managers understand how to build successful careers through formal and informal training and development, improving management development, and welcoming ideas.” (Nike Biz. 2013) Performing surveys as this, shows that Nike, Inc.’s Human Resources department is dedicated to strengthening their workforce by creating a trust-based relationship between the employer and employee.
Nikes Human resource Management is based on the “Culture of Empowerment Model” that Toyota uses. (Nike Biz. Human Resources & Empowerment. 2013) This model can be considered one of the Theory Z variations that American companies have designed to incorporate Japanese philosophies, yet remaining uniquely American. (Ferrell, Hirt, Ferrell, Pg. 282-283) Nike’s Human Resources Management is set up with Inputs and Outputs, which are designed to strengthen not only human resources management but also the management needed for every level of operations on a daily basis.

Nike's deliberate approach “includes worker empowerment - giving factory workers the skills and abilities needed to manage production and immediately address issues as they arise, such as quality or process improvements. These changes put decisions closer to the worker, and require a high level of support to ensure all workers have the skills and confidence enabling them to consistently produce quality products.” (Nike, Inc. CRR. Human Resources & Empowerment. 2103)
