Saving Schools and Students from "No Child Left Behind"Education dates back to the earliest civilizations where cavemen taught other cavemen how to make fire. Later on, Ancient Greek philosophers created some of the world's first schools, which were made available to the elite class. Today, education is growing to an extreme and is becoming a major issue in American politics and culture. However, with all this talk of educational reform and reforming 2001's "No Child Left Behind" bill, do we really need it?The United States government should take immediate action in removing George Bush's 2001 act, "No Child Left Behind." This act was created with excellent intentions in bringing education reform, however; in my opinion, it went terribly wrong. "No Child Left Behind" should be removed for a variety of reasons. First, the bill proved that it did not improve learning. Second, I believe that standardized tests are not a decent measure of student learning. Lastly, "No Child Left Behind" does not make teachers and schools by any means more accountable. This bill focuses mostly on student achievement on a series of exams, but fails to prepare students for life and the real world.To start off, George W. Bush's "No Child Left Behind Act" is considered the rebirth of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), No Child Left Behind's main goal is to make sure that all students test proficient by the year 2014. Bush's act is built off of four main principles: stronger accountability for results, more freedom for states and communities, proven education methods/quality of education, and more choices for parents.(http://www.ed.gov/nclb/overview/intro/4pillars.html)To begin, Bush's main goal for educational reform was stronger accountability for results. Under this act, states must work together to make sure all students are proficient in math and reading by the year 2014. Schools are now being forced to raise the scores at a steady pace; however, the schools that are not making progress must provide supplemental services, such as free tutoring or after-school assistance. If those same schools are not at the right level after five years, then the school must take action such as by replacing teachers and/or extending the school year. School districts now have so much freedom in ways they can use federal education funds. For example, school districts can use these funds to support teacher quality, technology, and innovative training.
